Lucy Worsley's Biography

Dr Lucy Worsley OBE is, by day, the Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces and, by night, a writer of history books. Somewhere in between she also finds the time to present TV series on a range of historical subjects.

Lucy has presented shows for Channel 4, History and has become a mainstay across the BBC covering everything from Alfred The Great, Jack The Ripper, Guy Fawkes, King Henry VIII and Britain’s fascination with murder.  In 2017 Lucy presented ‘Jane Austen: Behind Closed Doors’ (BBC2), in which Lucy explored the different houses in which Jane Austen lived and stayed, to discover just how much they shaped Jane’s life and novels.

Lucy  also presented, ‘Six Wives with Lucy Worsley’ (BBC1), an ambitious and ground-breaking approach to drama and history. Lucy travelled back in time to the Tudor Court to witness some of the most dramatic moments in the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. She also presented a programme ‘Empire of the Tsars: Romanov Russia’, a three part series for BBC4, telling the extraordinary story of the dynasty who ruled Russia for more than three centuries. She also created a programme ‘Mozart’s London Odyssey’ (BBC4) and co-hosted ‘The Real Versailles’ (BBC2).

Lucy’s writing has been very well received and her history books include Courtiers: A Secret History of the Georgian Court (2010), If Walls Could Talk: An Intimate History of Your Home (2010), A Very British Murder (2013) and Jane Austen at Home (2017). In 2016, Lucy published her first novel for children Eliza Rose which she followed up with My Name is Victoria in 2017.

Lucy won the BAFTA for Specialist Factual for the documentary ‘Suffragettes’ in 2019.  She graduated from New College, Oxford with a first-class honours BA degree in Ancient and Modern History. She was  awarded a PHD from the University of Sussex.
