Larry Brilliant's Biography

Larry Brilliant MD MPH, is a renowned epidemiologist who led the World Health Organization’s Smallpox Eradication Program that saved 2 million lives.

A pioneering physician and global philanthropist, Larry is Chair of the Skoll Global Threats Fund. He also advises Jeff Skoll on various ways to drive positive change on urgent social and environmental issues.

Prior to this role, Larry served as the inaugural Executive Director of Google.org and was later Chief Philanthropy Evangelist where he worked with the company’s co-founders to define the mission and strategic goals of Google’s philanthropic effects.

Larry defines himself as a social change “addict”, offering consulting and advisory services. Larry is also the founder-director of the Seva Foundation; which operates in dozens of countries, to eliminate preventable and curable blindness. He is the author of two books, and many articles, including “Sometimes Brilliant” which is an account of the successful eradication of smallpox.

He is an M.D. and M.P.H., who is board certified in preventive medicine and public health. Additionally, he also serves as a member of strategic advisory committees for the Berkeley School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. He was also associate professor of epidemiology, global health planning and economic development at the University of Michigan and Chairman of the National Bio-surveillance Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s agenda council on catastrophic risk, and a “first responder” for CDC’s bio-terrorism response effort.
