David Laws's Biography

Rt Hon David Laws MP is a highly regarded British politician who served briefly in the current Government. A former banker, David is regarded as one of the Liberal Democrat’s leading modernisers. He has championed coalition with David Cameron’s Conservative Party, and the Coalition’s cost-cutting and public sector reform programme. David resigned from the Treasury in 2010 admitting erroneously claiming expenses. He is tipped to return to a senior role in the UK Government.

After graduating from King’s College, Cambridge, with Double First Class Honours in Economics, he joined JP Morgan’s Treasury Division (1987-1992), where he was a Vice President. From 1992 to 1994, David was Managing Director in charge of the Sterling and US Dollar Treasuries at Barclays De Zoete Wedd. He left the City in 1994 to become the Liberal Democrat Party’s Director of Policy. He was elected to Parliament in 2001.

David was one of the Liberal Democrat team of four who negotiated the Coalition Agreement with the Conservative Party in May 2010, and he then served briefly as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, where he oversaw the Coalition plan to make immediate cuts of £6 billion to public spending.
