Claer Barrett's Biography

Claer Barrett is a multi-award-winning financial journalist, broadcaster and commentator on consumer, personal finance and investment issues. She is an Associate Editor and the Consumer Editor at the Financial Times. She writes the weekly ‘Serious Money’ in the FT weekend magazine. She presents the FT’s Money Clinic podcast and Business Clinic video series.

Claer frequently appears as a commentator on radio and TV, talking about personal finance, consumer and small business issues, and she is a regular guest on Eddie Mair’s Drive show on LBC Radio. She also features in ITV’s programme ‘Lorraine’, where she’s on the sofa talking money every Wednesday morning, she does finance phone-ins on LBC and guest spots on BBC programmes including Watchdog, Rip Off Britain and You & Yours.

An experienced event host, panel moderator and speaker, Claer’s work for the FT events includes presenting the FT Weekend Festival, Global Boardroom conference and wealth management events.

Covering financial issues of interest to consumers everywhere, her trademark is providing practical advice that cuts through the jargon of the financial world. In 2023, her book ‘What They Don’t Teach You About Money: Seven Habits that Unlock Financial Independence‘ was published by Ebury Edge. A long time advocate for financial literacy, this book helps demystify finance and help people to take more control of their money and their futures. In her early career, Claer was the property correspondent for Investors Chronicle, moving then to being the managing editor of weekly industry magazine, Property Week.

Claer is a trustee of FLIC, the FT-backed charity (Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign). She has a large social media presence (@Claerb) on Instagram, X and TikTok and her short ‘explainer’ videos about money get thousands of views.

In the 2022 Annual Headline Money Awards, Claer was named as ‘Commentator of the Year” for her Serious Money column in FT Weekend — the third time she has been awarded the accolade. Claer has also won a prestigious Wincott Award for campaigning on consumer issues.
