Andy Xie's Biography

Andy Xie is an independent economist and financial advisor, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on the economies of China and Southeast Asia.

He was at Morgan Stanley from 1997 to 2006, where he took on positions as Managing Director and Head of Morgan Stanley’s Asia/Pacific economics team. He was voted the number one economist in Asia between 2000 and 2006 by Institutional Investor Magazine and was selected by CCTV and the World Economic Forum as one of ten future economic leaders in China.

Andy has built a reputation as one of the few economists who has been able to consistently predict major market bubbles. He correctly called the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 1999 dot-com bubble and the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Andy was an associate director for two years with Macquarie Bank, where he pioneered the firm’s expansion into Southeast Asia. He also spent five years as an economist with the World Bank. Here, he was responsible for the World Bank programmes in industry and finance in Indonesia and telecom and power programmes in other Asia/Pacific countries.
