Albert Fox Cahn's Biography

Albert Fox Cahn is a lawyer, technologist, activist and keynote speaker on the future of technology.  He is widely considered a leading voice on the governance and development of technologies of the future.

He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.).  He started the project as he believes that local surveillance is an unprecedented threat to public safety, equity, and democracy.

He is Practitioner-in-Residence at the Information Law Institute of N.Y.U. Law School, and a Fellow at Yale Law School’s Information Society Project, Ashoka and TED.  Albert previously served as an associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where he advised Fortune 50 companies on technology policy, antitrust law, and consumer privacy.

Albert’s work has featured in numerous publications, include the Boston Globe, The Guardian, NBC Think, The New York Times, Newsweek, Slate and WIRED, among others.  His TED Talk, ‘The shift we need to stop mass surveillance’, has over 450 thousand views, and he frequently speakers at leading technology governance forums and delivers lectures at leading universities.

Albert is a serving member of the New York Immigration Coalition’s Immigrant Leaders Council and IEEE Standards Association P3119 AI Procurement Working Group.  He on the editorial board for the Anthem Ethics of Personal Data Collection, and was a founding member of the New York Immigrant Freedom Fund’s Advisory Council.

Albert received his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School (where he was an editor of the Harvard Law & Policy Review), and his B.A. in Politics and Philosophy from Brandeis University.
