His research, which was initially considered controversial, now powers technologies like facial recognition, natural language processing and self-driving cars. Having previously won the Turing Award in 2018, Hinton’s winning of the Nobel Prize acknowledges the profound global impact of AI, which has reshaped industries from healthcare to finance. His vision has not only advanced technology but also opened new ethical discussions on the future of AI and its societal implications.
